The Biggest Loser (U. S. TV series)The Biggest Loser is an American competition reality show that debuted on NBC on October 1. The show features obese or overweight contestants competing to win a cash prize by losing the highest percentage of weight relative to their initial weight. Premise. Depending on the season a team may work with a specific trainer or all trainers may work with all contestants. The trainers are responsible (in conjunction with medical personnel retained by the show) for designing comprehensive workout and nutrition plans and teaching them to the contestants. However, the contestants are individually responsible for implementing the principles taught. During an episode, various challenges and temptations (see below) are featured. Those who win a particular challenge are given special privileges, such as a weight advantage for the next weigh- in or even full immunity from being voted off the show. Each week culminates in another weigh- in to determine which team has lost the most weight for that week, in percentage of total weight lost. The team that has lost the least percentage during that week (known as . The vote is usually made by the other teams, though some episodes feature one team making the decision alone. The Biggest Loser is an American competition reality show that debuted on NBC on October 19, 2004. The show features obese or overweight contestants competing to win. Some episodes feature a second, . Other episodes allow for the contestants, if successfully meeting a goal at the weigh- in, to all receive immunity for the week. When the number of contestants has shrunk to a predetermined smaller number (unknown to the contestants), the teams are dissolved and the contestants compete one- on- one against each other. The season finale features both the contestants remaining on the show and those sent home early; the latter are brought back for the final show. Those sent home early compete for a smaller prize while those on the show compete for a larger prize and the title of . Some episodes have been aired in a shortened one- hour format to accommodate adjacent network programming such as The Voice. Can The Biggest Loser: Transformed shed its fat-shaming stigma? The temptation usually requires contestants to gamble by eating or drinking delicious but high- calorie foods in exchange for what may seem to be a beneficial trade- off. The benefits may or may not be known to the contestants in advance. Examples include eating sweet foods for a chance to call their loved ones, eating a big slice of cake to win an unknown prize (which, in one episode, turned out to be an exercise bike) or giving up time with a trainer for a chance to win money. Contestants are given a set period of time before the offer passes. Reward Challenge: Contestants compete to win a prize, first as teams and then as individuals after the teams are dissolved. After the challenge, viewers are shown the winning team enjoying their reward while the losing team accepts their loss. Prizes range from immunity- which is exemption from elimination—to exercise equipment, phone calls home or weight prizes, which allow winners of a challenge to have a greater weight loss at the Weigh- In, or losers of a challenge to have a lower weight loss at the Weigh- In (e. If there is an unequal number of players on each team, then the team(s) with more players must pick an individual or individuals who will sit out until there is an equal number of players on each team. Occasionally, players have to be cleared by the show's doctors in order to participate in physical challenges. Initial Workout: Contestants work out with the trainers. During this segment, the trainers will often speak with certain contestants, especially those who are doing poorly. Usually, underlying emotional issues are revealed at this time (such as a loss of a family member or a physical calamity), often the triggering events that led to the weight gain in the first place. Last Chance Workout: Last chance workouts are often shown as grueling, final preparations for the weigh in. This is a real test of strength and trainers push contestants to their limits. Last Chance Challenge: Introduced in season seventeen, the last chance challenge is a variant between a reward challenge and a last chance workout. As with the last chance workout, the last chance challenge will usually take place inside the gym. The winning team will win a prize that benefits the team just before the upcoming weigh- in (for example, a two- pound weight advantage for the team). Weigh- In: Although the show depicts the weigh- in in an evening setting, the actual weight measurement occurs off- camera in a morning session and the contestants are not told of the results at that time. All contestants are weighed to determine the amount they have lost relative to their total body weight. During team- based competition, the team that loses the highest percentage wins and the losing team must send one person home. When the teams are dissolved and the show becomes an individual competition, the two contestants who lose the lowest percentage of weight are below the yellow line and eligible for elimination. A similar setup to individual- based weigh- ins happens when the two initial teams are broken up into four teams of two or three, as happened in the second and fourth seasons. In season ten, the rules changed. The contestants are now expected to weigh in before challenges. The yellow line now increases up to half of the slots depending on how many contestants there are at the ranch. Contestants below the yellow line face an elimination challenge before the vote. In addition, the Biggest Loser of the week is allowed to save a person below the yellow line from elimination. Some episodes have featured both a yellow line and a red line; a contestant who falls below the red line is eliminated outright from the competition without a vote of the other contestants. Elimination Challenge: Introduced in season nine, the elimination challenge was for the two people below the yellow line. In the only elimination challenge of that season, the longest one standing stayed while the other went home. In season ten, the elimination challenge was re- introduced. Those below the yellow line participate in a challenge to escape from the vote. The two least successful contestants face the vote. The Vote: The final segment of the show takes place in a dining room that has refrigerators labeled with each contestant's name (active contestants have their name illuminated) and filled with that contestant's favorite tempting foods. Prior to the vote, contestants facing elimination plead their case as to why they should remain on the Ranch (several episodes feature contestants making a . The other contestants are not required to honor any requests to be sent home, though generally such requests are honored. The contestants facing elimination arrive at the dining room first; the other contestants each carry a covered plate containing the name of the person they wish to vote out. In the event of a tie, the contestant or team who lost the least percentage of weight is eliminated, except if both of the contestants or teams lost the least percentage of weight. As people are voted out, the light for their name is extinguished. After the vote, the eliminated contestant is shown at home and discusses the progress they made in their weight loss. Several former Biggest Loser contestants have regained some or all of the weight. So while researchers did find a correlation between that rate, on average, with members of the Registry, all this correlation can mean—if there is any causal correlation at all (there is no control group) - - is that it is more likely, on average, for someone to be successful at losing a large amount of weight, and more successful at maintaining that weight loss. There is no way of stating whether this rate is more healthy than any other rate, simply because (a) there is no comparison with any other rate, and not even any comparison between disease or mortality rates of members of this Registry and any other random group. Other health writers take it even further, suggesting that everything from the shows dietary guidelines to workout routines are completely flawed. Barry Sears sums up the wellness paradox: . Second, the more people exercise, the hungrier they become. Sears continues by claiming that . The reason viewers see their muscles emerging as the show goes on is because as the layer of fat surrounding the muscles is lost, muscles become more visible. Chia Seeds Nutrition & Facts About Weight Loss Claims. Remember the Chia Pet? These gift items, clay figurines that sprouted grass- like . Fast- forward a few decades, and the seeds from the same chia plant are being sold online and in health food stores as a weight loss aid. That makes sense, as chia seeds are a concentrated food containing healthy omega- 3 fatty acids, carbohydrates, protein, fiber, antioxidants, and calcium. Chia seeds are an unprocessed, whole- grain food that can be absorbed by the body as seeds (unlike flaxseeds). One ounce (about 2 tablespoons) contains 1. The mild, nutty flavor of chia seeds makes them easy to add to foods and beverages. They are most often sprinkled on cereal, sauces, vegetables, rice dishes, or yogurt or mixed into drinks and baked goods. They can also be mixed with water and made into a gel. Both flaxseed oil and ground flaxseed can help with weight loss in ways that most people wouldn’t expect and it has nothing to do with dieting. Like all other nuts and seeds, flaxseed is also rich in healthy and dietary fats, with 3g in 1tsp. So it helps in curbing your appetite by keeping you. Can Chia Really Help You Lose Weight? In theory, chia seeds are supposed to expand in your belly, helping you to feel full, eat less, and ultimately shed pounds. But one study indicates otherwise. Ulbricht cautions that if you have food allergies (especially to sesame or mustard seeds) or are on high blood pressure medications or blood thinners, you should ask your health care provider before adding chia to your diet. The Bottom Line on Chia. Enjoy chia seeds for their flavor and to boost the fiber, protein, calcium, antioxidants, and omega- 3s in your diet. But don't expect a big weight loss boost. Unfortunately, there is no magic bullet (or seed) for weight loss. If you want to lose weight, you'll need to follow a healthy, calorie- controlled diet and get more physical activity. I am confused about supplements. I make homemade raw cat food. The recipe I use does not have vitamins that are included in some prepared premixes. Healthy Cat Treats: How to Treat Your Cat Without Making Her Fat. Homemade Cat Food, A Balancing Act. Last Updated on Saturday, January 1. PM. Published on Saturday, February 0. PM. Written by Marta Kaspar If you have ever been interested in nutritional science, I am sure you have come across the term ? According to a common definition, it is a diet that contains adequate amounts of all necessary nutrients required for healthy growth and activity. Sounds pretty straightforward, doesn't it? What makes this statement more complicated in the world of pet nutrition is that almost every country has its own guidelines for all of the necessary nutrients and recommended nutrient ranges can vary greatly. Most pet food companies in the United States comply with the Association of American Feed Control Officials (The Association of American Feed Control Officials is a commercial enterprise which attempts to regulate the quality and safety of fodder and pet food in the US. AAFCO is a voluntary organization comprised largely of regulatory officials who have responsibility for enforcing their state’s laws and regulations concerning the safety of animal feeds. But are AAFCO's nutrient recommendations the best nutrient ranges for our pets? I don't think anybody can answer this question. What I am trying to say is that any nutrient level ranges should serve only as guidelines and not as absolute numbers. But let's go back to the original question. While I can't speak for all the suppliers of prepared supplement premixes, the reason why some of the vitamins, such as iron, zinc and folic acid are added to our products is that these premixes need to be versatile. They need to ensure a balanced diet for all kinds of meats and fill all of the nutritional gaps in foods with wide calorie ranges. Premix versatility is especially important in case someone is not able to provide a good food variety to their pets. Homemade recipes will vary in the supplements they call for, as will prepared premixes. This does not indicate that one is deficient compared to another. Some vitamins might not be included because the meat itself would provide the amounts needed. Since all nutrient requirements fall into a range, rather than absolute numbers, adding to the naturally occurring vitamins will ensure that enough is provided. I have been involved in cat nutrition for a long time and have calculated nutrient profiles for countless recipes. What I have learned during those years is that it is not always just the numbers that matter. A lot of it is common sense. I've also learned that you don't need have to have an advanced degree to feed your cat a good healthy diet. You just need to pay attention to a couple of simple rules. Here are some basics you should know if you prepare a homemade diet for your cat: Cats Need a High- Any of a group of complex organic compounds that contain carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and sometimes sulphur, the characteristic element being nitrogen. They comprise the principal constituents of the protoplasm of all cells. All proteins have a common property; their structure includes simple units, amino acids. Miss Homemade's healthy homemade cat food recipes from scratch are exactly what. Homemade cat food, especially raw food, is more natural, healthy and palatable to our animals. Learn more about balanced homemade recipes for cats. They need a high- protein, meat- based diet to thrive and do well. A low- protein, high- An organic substance composed of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen; mainly from plant origin. Senior Cat Diet Homemade SmoothiesLearn the three major reasons why you should feed your pet a healthy, homemade diet, which comes at a fraction of the cost of high end commercial pet food. Fill it with goodies that your pet will love. Food, treats, toys — you can get it all here. Making your own cat food is certainly a compromise from the 'ideal' diet for a cat. But unless you're willing to capture wild field mice and small birds and let your. The most important carbohydrates are starches, sugars, celluloses and gums. In the wild they would instinctively seek and find all the nutrients they need. However, our indoor pets depend entirely on us to give them the proper diet. Feeding a variety of parts of whole animals which over time will simulate a whole prey diet, including cut portions of meat and bone, and whole organ meats. These diets use no ground meats at all. They are made of whole meats, bones and organs and usually don't require any additional supplementation. They are probably the healthiest diets for cats but involve very careful planning and the cats have to be willing to eat all of the required meat varieties including the bone- in cuts. Diets with Additional Supplementation. Almost all diets other than frankenprey or whole prey diets should have certain supplements added to fill the nutritional gaps created by meat processing, using only limited cuts from the animal or removing the bones from the diet. Even if you are feeding whole carcass grinds it is safer to add some supplements because it's not really known what kind of nutrient losses occur from grinding and storage. Here are the basic guidelines. Almost all diets that are boneless or have bones, are cooked or raw, should have small amounts of liver and taurine added. Add calcium to boneless meat. Although boneless meat alone has almost all the nutrients your cat needs for healthy growth and activity, it has almost no calcium. Therefore, if you decide to feed your cat boneless meat, you always have to add calcium. Meat Variety is Important. If you are not adding a prepared premix to your cat's homemade diet, but you are adding vitamins individually, be aware that meat might or might not be slightly low in some other minerals and vitamins B and E. What are the characteristics of a good senior diet for dogs? Your older dog will need a well-balanced diet that is generally lower in calories and fat, yet higher in. Hill's Pet Nutrition creates dog and cat food that transform lives - precisely engineered to meet your pet's individual needs. Senior Cat Diet Homemade BreadThis depends on small deficiencies that particular meats might have. These insufficiencies can be evened out by increasing meat variety. Choose the Right Supplements. In case you want to make your cat food with the help of a prepared multivitamin supplement premix, use only those premixes designed for homemade pet diets. Different products have slightly different compositions. It might be a good idea to change the brands from time to time, as this can help even out the nutrient profile in addition to feeding a variety of meats. If a premix is labeled for use with boneless meats then you don't need to worry about adding additional calcium because it is already included. Generic pet supplements or multivitamins designed for human consumption should not be used in homemade diets for pets at all. Individual human- grade vitamins should be added only in amounts called for in a homemade raw diet recipe. More Doesn't Always Mean Better. With some vitamins, it might be safer to have your homemade diet slightly under- supplemented than considerably over- supplemented. Be especially careful with fat- soluble vitamins such as vitamins D and A. Avoid adding these in concentrated forms altogether. Pay Attention to Your Cat. The quality of any diet will likely have a visible effect on your cat. Try to pay close attention and monitor weight variations, the quality of your cat's coat, changes in drinking habits and activity level. Homemade and Raw Cat Food Diets: Recipes, Benefits, and More. Several years ago, Lynne Ackman of Chicago began making food at home for her five rescue cats. She had tried kibble and canned food to treat one’s inflammatory bowel disease and another’s diabetes, but it wasn’t until she adopted a raw diet of rabbit and fowl that their health dramatically improved, she says.“I think raw is the gold standard for a feline diet,” she says, explaining that she chose that path after seeing a friend’s gorgeous cats who ate a diet of raw meat. Ackman, a software tester, is among a growing number of cat owners doing it themselves - the pet food scares of recent years have, by some accounts, motivated the trend - - but she doesn’t mention the diet to veterinary specialists she’s seen over the years; she says they tend to be “anti- homemade and anti- raw.”There is a chasm between cat owners who feed their pets raw or homemade cat food and veterinarians who warn that without quality control, the risks of bacterial contamination or nutritional deficiency are too high. If you choose to go it alone, be warned: Making your own cat food is an exacting and time- consuming business. Striking the right balance of ingredients, including vitamins and minerals, and properly storing the food are critical for a happy and healthy animal. What Do Cats Need to Eat? As obligate carnivores, cats need: Protein from meat or fish. Amino acids like taurine and arginine (from meat or fish)Fatty acids. Vitamins. Minerals. Water. Carbohydrates like rice and corn in small amounts are fine, but they aren’t necessary for a cat’s diet. However, a modest amount of carbs will provide useful energy and may reduce the cost of a home cooked diet, says Rebecca Remillard, a board- certified veterinary nutritionist who works with the MSPCA Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston and maintains a dietary consulting business. Nutrition guidelines for cats are available through the American Association of Feed Control Officials. Raw Cat Food: The Risks and the Rewards. Remillard says raw meat diets are neither safe nor nutritionally sound. She’s backed up by the American Animal Hospital Association, which warns against the risk of salmonella poisoning to both the cat and human members of the household. Continued“There are a lot of people who want to feed raw. I tell them they have to be aware of zoonotic (animal to human) disease transmission, food safety, and contagion issues. I don’t think veterinarians should get upset about it, but they should make clear the health issues,” Remillard says. Feeding cats a raw meat diet also leaves too much room for variables, another reason she doesn’t advocate such a diet. The potential for slip- up is high if the owner goes out of town and the food is left out too long, or if he substitutes one ingredient for another, she says. Lisa Pierson, a veterinarian in Lomita, Calif., is familiar with the arguments and disputes them passionately on her own web site. She says she hasn’t had issues with bacterial contamination in the six years she has made her own cat food because she is careful: She knows where the meat comes from, she parboils mostly rabbit and bone- in chicken, grinds it herself, and adds minerals like taurine to make sure her cats are eating a balanced diet. She says it’s also cheaper than higher- quality canned food and would take an owner of two cats about two hours a month to make. If you can’t find a supportive veterinarian and you are determined to go raw, go to www. A Cooked Diet: The Risks and Rewards. Little scientific evidence exists either for or against a cooked diet for cats. Some, like Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, warn against making raw or cooked cat food at home because of the importance of getting the right quantity and proportions of nutrients. Remillard says she has talked to many cat owners eager to switch to homemade cat food in the wake of melamine poisoning in commercial cat foods. And although she doesn’t push homemade cat food diets, she says they can work - - as long as cat owners consult a veterinarian- nutritionist to formulate one. Continued. How Richard Simmons Got Trapped In His Own Mythology. Evan Hurd Photography / Getty Images. Famous American fitness coach Richard Simmons in 1. The podcast Missing Richard Simmons recently became a cultural sensation. Created by Dan Taberski, a producer at The Daily Show and self- described former friend of Simmons, it framed the fitness guru’s decision to retire from public life — around February of 2. Taberski clarified at the outset that the podcast wasn’t in search of “the punchline or the half- forgotten icon” but of the friend who “shocked everyone who knows him” by disappearing from their lives — including Taberski’s. And his approach was effective: The podcast dominated the i. Tunes chart and generated the kind of mainstream attention not seen since the success of Serial. But the podcast’s story of Simmons’ retirement into privacy, an almost Hitchcockian tale featuring the fitness world’s neo–Greta Garbo, only captivated the public in the way that it did because of our fascination with the half- forgotten icon. Ultimately, Taberski didn’t uncover anything that wasn’t already presented in a rich, intricately reported longform piece published last year by the Daily News. Much like Taberski’s narrative, the article — which prompted Simmons to phone in to the Today show to assuage any concerns fans had about him — raised questions about his housekeeper, noted Simmons’ sadness over the death of his Dalmatians, and sought to solve the “mystery” of Simmons’ disappearance by diagnosing him personally: Was he depressed, emotionally exhausted, or even undergoing a gender transition? A number of critiques emerged about the discomforting ethical aspects of the podcast; before the podcast was even conceived, Taberski had approached Simmons as a documentarian looking for a subject, and Simmons had declined to participate. Sarah Larson, writing in The New Yorker, concluded that “Like . The fascination with his disappearance is ultimately a cultural conundrum that can be traced through a consideration of the way Simmons’ celebrity evolved, especially the persona that emerged in the ’8. Mother Teresa of fitness. That image worked — apparently too well — by disrupting gendered boundaries between personal and professional, between commercial and spiritual, between camp and sincerity. And it is by understanding how that image functioned — and how it was received — that the fascination with his retirement makes a different kind of sense. Richard Simmons was not always the caricature most people remember now, performing flamboyant selflessness by preaching health in tiny shorts and tank tops. That his public life from the 1. Simmons’ ’8. 0s celebrity reshaped his image. In fact, he first gained media attention when he was 2. Simpatico. And Simmons had always been intrigued by celebrity culture and performance; he appeared in Federico Fellini’s Satyricon and The Clowns when he still weighed 2. The Anatomy Asylum was cited in news coverage as the kind of chic place where Cher, Diana Ross, Barbra Streisand, and even Paul Newman worked out. Early articles about Ruffage suggest that Simmons’ own growing celebrity and campy mode of dealing with customers was his biggest selling point: “Its renown may have more to do with its owner than anything it serves,” explained the Washington Post in 1. During lunch one day he shamed a customer who had lit up a cigarette .. Simmons began to approach national celebrity through his appearances on soap operas in the ’8. General Hospital. A Facebook spokesperson told Gizmodo that they “don’t have any more details to share beyond Mark’s post to pass on at this time,” but that the company offers. How Richard Simmons Got Trapped In His Own Mythology. Simmons’ public image as the fitness industry’s Lady of Perpetual Sorrow confused cultural categories, and. On television, as with his students and customers, his kitschy excess and scandalously flirtatious presence made for great entertainment. With his bubbly — almost aggressive — cheerfulness, constant animation, and tendency to break into showtunes, Simmons placed himself in a tradition of extravagant white masculinity associated with gay men of a certain age. But that was an association that he — and for the most part, the mainstream media — never explicitly addressed. Throughout his career it would be noted through adjectives like “bedazzled,” “colorful,” “flamboyant,” “wacky,” “obnoxious,” “outrageous,” “zany,” and “campy.”In a 1. People magazine cover story, a woman described only as an “Omaha matron” explained his appeal thusly: “I used to watch Phil Donahue. I turned him off because he had so many programs about these gays and couples swapping wives. I do exercises with Richard now — and he makes me feel younger.” Simmons, in other words, was being framed by media narratives — and consumed by many — as an innocent alternative to the lurid sexual politics of Donahue. Simmons still teased his own sexuality in ways that were subtle enough to avoid an overt political stance, but obvious enough to be funny. This willingness to play with and even incite some discomforting questions — about what he might desire, given his self- presentation — forged a path into the world of morning and daytime talk shows both as a guest and host. In an episode of his own talk show, The Richard Simmons Show, which aired from 1. Simmons hands his guest (the dreamy General Hospital soap star Tristan Rogers) a bouquet of roses before giving him one of his usual long and tight hugs, which appear both innocently enthusiastic and carnal. Never- Say- Diet Book captures this mixture: He crowdsourced questions from the public to write the book, in a bid for democratic appeal, but it was promoted as the diet followed by Dustin Hoffman, Barbra Streisand, Henry Winkler, and Diana Ross. Some time after the cancellation of his morning show in 1. Simmons narrative we associate him with today emerged: a kind of mater dolorosa of America’s marginalized fat communities. He was a frequent and successful guest on the daytime talk shows, the genre of trauma and confessions, the style of feel- your- pain television that Oprah — who in some ways replaced Simmons as America’s fat abjection expert — grew to dominate. But he also used his now infamousinfomercials as mini talk shows, presenting the painful personal stories of some of his clients (framed as “friends”) as they testified to their abjection — and Simmons’ amazingly personal help — on national television. Why, Kathy?” As melodramatic music plays in the background, she and a number of other women explain how they sought him out at his mall appearances because he gave them messages of hope. I'm so excited,” she says. Tellingly, when some of the women interviewed on Missing Richard Simmons talked about the way he entered into their lives, they made it sound like a television star had suddenly materialized at their door. All of a sudden Richard Simmons jumps in my life, who was full of color, and I feel suddenly hope, and it was.. Kathy recalled to Taberski. This was also the attitude of the women who appeared in the infomercials: Here was a soap star shaking up their everyday banality and acting as their mother confessor, all in one. Simmons exploited the melodramatic register of television to perform empathy and make a space for people who were excluded from mainstream fitness representation and marketing. Indeed, the academic critic Rhonda Garelick noted in a 1. Postmodern Culture that Simmons’ most peculiar accomplishment was his use of camp — originally understood as a queer, anti- commercial sensibility — to ease fat women back into consumer society. His televisual celebrity was at the core of his ability to connect with strangers: It made him a star, but in a way that also created an illusion of approachability. Just as talk shows made stars of ordinary people who spoke their truth from the audience, Simmons gave some of his clients a taste of stardom as he expanded into a lifestyle emporium, promoting the “Deal- a- Meal” weight loss program and, later, Sweatin’ to the Oldies workout tapes, where he famously included “real people” in the dance and workout sessions. And as he became a celebrity himself, Simmons shifted from his earlier alignment with a glamorous, mainstream fitness ideal that . He started selling himself as an antidote to a fitness world that was all about achieving conventional ideals of desire and beauty, becoming a Mother Teresa for those “shafted, rejected and neglected,” by society, as he explained to Oprah: “the overweight, the senior citizen, and the disabled.” By the time the Anatomy Asylum was renamed Slimmons, around 1. Simmons’ persona now fully represented that new mixture of kitsch and his melodramatic inclusion of marginalized bodies.
